It’s time again for the annual “super gigantic garage sale” staged each summer by the Hilo Betsuin Buddhist Women’s Association. This year’s event is set for Saturday, Aug. 2, with bargains on a huge variety of items offered from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. at Sangha Hall, next door to Hilo Betsuin, 424 Kilauea Ave., next to Starbucks in downtown Hilo.

BWA President Lillie Tsuchiya thanked veteran coordinator Amy Ban for the many years she has chaired the sale.

“It takes organization, commitment, dedication and hard work and Amy does a fantastic job. Also, because of the generosity of church members and friends donating the thousands of items, this has become THE garage sale to check out,” Tsuchiya said. “BWA members will be hard at work two weeks prior to the event, sorting, pricing, and, categorizing the items. It takes a lot of dedication and commitment of our members, we have been able to present this garage sale to the community.”

Books, toys, games, kitchenware, appliances, household goods, furniture, clothing in every size and color for every occasion, purses, jewelry, treasures of all kinds will be available.

Limited craft items hand sewn by BWA members and plants also will be on sale. Through the generosity of church members and friends, truckloads of donated items are collected annually.

Come early for the best bargains, ample parking and free admission. The garage sale is the biggest project for BWA and enables the organization to make substantial monetary contributions toward minor and major projects such as the recent refurbishing of the temple altar and the pending structure of the temple bell.

In addition, members contribute their time to temple cleaning, visitation and sewing of aprons and blankets at long-term care facilities. In the community, the BWA helps the Peanut Butter Ministry monthly, the Blood Bank of Hawaii, Project Dana and participates in many islandwide activities, regional and world conventions. BWA’s lifelong dedication to living the Dharma has extended far beyond the kitchen and temple compound into the larger community.
